Feature and Follow Friday is a weekly blog hop hosted by Parajunkee and Alison Can Read. The rules include writing a blog post in response to the Question of the Week and then following the hosts, the two featured bloggers, and anyone else in the original list you like. The goal is to gain new friends and followers, so comment on every blog post you come across. For more specific rules, check out their much more substantial posts!

Question of the Week: Do you have a go to genre when you're happy, sad, or angry? - Suggested by Take Me Away

Answer: Because my favorite genre is dystopian, it's difficult to crave it when I'm happy. Usually I'll go back to my roots and pick up Mary Hoffman, John Flanagan, or someone else related to a little magic or fantasy element. Most recently I read Splintered by A.G. Howard and I almost didn't want to pick up another dystopian!

When I'm sad, it's usually because I read too much dystopian so I need to step back from that. Again, the fantasy is best after so much science fiction, but if I'm really upset I'll jump into Jean Craighead George's Julie of the Wolves. Any other dog/wolf based novel I put down when something happens to the animal, but I know it's coming in this trilogy fifteen times over so it's more nostalgic than anything else.

I avoid all kinds of romance (with the exception of Twilight in high school) because it frustrates me how the female character always swoons and loses it when she's with her new love, even if 20 pages before she was kicking butt without him. If that's the case, I try to find a middle grade or very young adult novel because those are the only ones without romance so I can stop being angry with whatever's going on in life.

What's your go-to genre? Check out more posts by following the list on the hosts' pages!

I can't stand romance either. I like love stories, but I don't like romance novels.
    Thanks for stopping by!

  2. Sorry about the winding road to get here!
Love is great, but the chick lit romance is way too overdone. Glad to see someone agrees!

Thanks for your lovely comment! :)

    1. I agree. If they develop the love later, then I'm hooked. I adore friendships that turn into romance, although Sparks' novels are too much for me.

Thanks for your comment and following! :)

    1. Ahh! Another dystopia lover! It's totally cool, and the supernatural fantasy was something I haven't read in a while and it was so great, I didn't want to go back to read dystopian novels for this blog! But I wrote a review of Splintered anyway :)

Thank you for your awesome comment!

    1. Thank you for your follow! :D

With dystopian novels, you definitely have to figure out which style you like best. Personally, Hunger Games frustrated me, but Divergent might be my favorite dystopian series of all time. It's a lot of trial and error. I think my lack of love for romance novels stems from the fact that now everyone wants a deep, A-plot love for the story that takes away from the dystopia, fantasy, sci-fi, etc. I enjoy romance when I am specifically looking for some romance though :) Thank you for your comment!

  8. hahah so true about the romance. But for some reason it still pulls me in as long as I can find a different romance that's not all swoony and character whiplash-y Jessi The Book Cove

    1. Haha! I'm so referring to romance novels as character whiplash-y from now! It's perfect.
